Robert Macfarlane is a Clinical Psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. He began his training at the University of Cape Town, where he obtained undergraduate and Honour’s degrees in psychological studies. He went on to complete a Master’s degree in neuropsychology. This training was based in the neurology department at Groote Schuur Hospital and was coordinated by Mark Solms, a psycho-analyst and world authority in the field of neuropsychology. Following this degree, Robert furthered his studies at the University of Johannesburg, where he was awarded a Master’s degree in clinical psychology, Cum Laude.
Robert works with adolescents and adults, and his primary interests are neuropsychological assessment and psychotherapy. With respect to his therapeutic style, he considers himself a generalist, but is most heavily influenced by Object Relations theory. He has gained diverse experience within the South African context, and has worked at Groote Schuur Hospital, Tara Hospital, 1 Military Hospital and Sterkfontein Hospital. In addition, he has gained international experience at the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust in Cambridgeshire (UK), as well as on the neurological rehabilitation unit at the Wellington Hospital, which is the largest private hospital in London.
At the end of 2011, Robert moved back to Johannesburg from London, in order to establish a private practice. He has dedicated himself to the discipline of psychology since leaving school and remains passionate about understanding and assisting people with psychological difficulties, including depression, anxiety, inter-personal problems and low self-esteem, as well as more severe forms of psychopathology. He performs neuropsychological assessments in the context of any acquired brain pathology, including stroke, traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative disorders.
