Clinical PsychologistWendy Hay decided at a young age to choose a career that would make a difference in people’s lives. It is for this reason that her first career choice was nursing.

After working as a registered nurse for many years, Wendy decided to get involved with Hospice. It was while doing the hospice course that she realised that her skills were more aligned to counselling. It was then that she started to focus her energies on working towards Clinical Psychology.

Wendy completed the FAMSA counselling course and subsequently worked as a trainer in FAMSA before leaving for full time studies at WITS. It was here that her natural inclination towards community and health influenced her decision to study in the field of community and health psychology. This involved wide ranging activities within poorer communities and the development of projects.

Once completing her Community/Health Masters in Psychology, Wendy embarked on her clinical training. It was during this period that she worked in the field of eating disorders. After qualifying Wendy spent six months specialising in the field of addiction.

Because of Wendy’s broad base of training and experience, her approach is very integrative. She tries to move away from aspects of blame, to one of hope. Her understanding of the individual is that we all have a natural tendency to seek wholeness and balance.

When this is damaged through injury or circumstance, the individual experiences it through anxiety, depression, or some related emotional symptom. The need to rediscover balance is often hampered by an environment that is harmful, or by the need for deeper insight.

This therapeutic approach lends itself to both couple’s and relationship therapy.

Wendy has a natural and deep love of nature. Her free time is spent in the bush, or by being involved in conservation related activities. This deeply felt attraction has motivated Wendy to become more involved in the developing area of Eco Psychology.
